Ear Syringing

Though it’s no longer routinely offered on the NHS, we continue to offer ear syringing where it has been clinically indicated or requested by one of our clinicians.

Immunisations

Protection for the whole family is encouraged. We run regular clinics for childhood scheduled vaccinations. You will normally be contacted to book you’re your child’s routine vaccinations when they are due.  We also provide routine vaccinations for influenza, shingles and pneumonia as well as taking part in a wide range other government immunisation schemes.

6-8 week Newborn Check

We offer a joint Mother and Baby Check between 6-8 weeks from birth. Please make contact with the practice, allowing 2-4 weeks in advance for your appointment. The appointment last 30 minutes.

What happens at a 6 to 8 weeks baby check?

Your baby will be invited for a thorough physical examination. This is usually done by a GP.

Your baby’s eyes, heart, hips and – for boys – testicles will be checked. They’ll also have their weight, length and head circumference measured.

A GP or health visitor will discuss your baby’s vaccinations with you. These are offered at 8 weeks, 12 weeks, 16 weeks and 12 months old, and before your child starts school.

What happens at your postnatal check?

  • You’ll be asked how you’re feeling as part of a general discussion about your mental health and wellbeing.
  • You’ll be asked if you still have any vaginal discharge and whether you have had a period since the birth.
  • Your blood pressure will be checked if you had problems during pregnancy or immediately after the birth.
  • You may be offered an examination to see if your stitches have healed if you had an episiotomy or caesarean section.
  • If you were due for a cervical screening test while pregnant, this should be rescheduled for 12 weeks after the birth.
  • You’ll be asked about contraception.
  • If you’re overweight or obese, with a BMI of 30 or more, you may be weighed. Your doctor should give you weight loss advice and guidance on healthy eating and physical activity.

Travel Vaccinations

Our Services

Whilst Stuart Road Surgery offer a limited number of vaccinations that may be required for travel, we are not a travel vaccination clinic and do not undertake all travel vaccinations.

Due to the ever changing requirements of travel vaccinations, we do not offer travel vaccination advice. For this reason, there is a certain amount of research that you will need to undertake before approaching the Surgery.

Once you have established what vaccinations you need, we can offer advice based on your previous vaccination history and whether they are required again.

What vaccinations do I need?

Using the most up to date information about travel vaccinations for the country you are visiting, you will need to establish what you require.

The NHS travel vaccination webpage can be seen here: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/travel-vaccinations/ The page contains information and links to other websites that can be used to ascertain what vaccinations you require.

When should I have travel vaccinations?

It’s recommended for most travel vaccinations that these are administered 8 weeks before travel. Our Nursing staff are the only clinicians that administer travel vaccinations at the Surgery and their clinics are regularly booked up a number of weeks in advance, so we may not be able to offer you an appointment for a number of weeks. For this reason, we recommend you begin your research at least 4 months ahead of travel.

Young Peoples Corner

Stuart Road Surgery is currently undertaking work to achieve the “Young Person Friendly Accreditation”. If you have any questions or feedback, please contact the surgery as we would love to hear from you. Click here to read more

Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy services are available to us. Our clinical team can refer you to physiotherapy if they believe you will benefit from this.

Maternity Services

We have an attached midwife who can advise you on all aspects of your pregnancy. We recommend that you have your first (booking) appointment with her at 8 weeks. She will then advise when you should be seen again, and refer you for any appropriate scans and tests.

Family Planning

Our doctors and nurses can advise on a range of family planning options, including the contraceptive pill, vasectomy, and the insertion of coils and implants. Please ask for an appointment.

Healthy Living and Wellbeing

Patients can now benefit from two services aimed at helping you help yourself with a range of structured support – they are our Social Prescribers (Live Well Wakefield) and our Health and Wellbeing Coaches.  Both teams are here to offer information advice and support. Your social prescribing link worker would help to signpost you to a range of relevant services to help you with things like weight management, social isolation and debt support.  These are most often non-medical issues that you are facing and you could well be facing more than one at once.
